░ Archive Information ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Global War is being distributed in a secured archive form utilizing the
ARJ archiving software (Copyright (c) Robert Jung) for maximum
compression and ease of portability.
ARJ Security Envelope
Due to the unsecured distribution method of shareware, the Global
war self-extracting archive has been archived with the ARJ security
envelope feature. The security envelope makes it nearly impossible
for anyone, other than the original creator of the archive, to
modify the archive in any manner, thus somewhat ensuring that no
files will be missing, modified, or infected with a virus.
Upon extraction of the archive, you should see the following
message displayed:
*** Valid ARJ-SECURITY envelope signature:
*** John Dailey R#2890
If you do not see this message displayed, DO NOT execute the
software enclosed, as the archive has most-likely been tampered
with or is not an archive created by the author. You may acquire
a valid and secured archive of the current version of this software
by contacting John Dailey at any of the addresses and/or sites
listed at the end of this documentation.

░ Distribution Of Global War ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The Global War archive may be distributed freely in its unmodified,
security-sealed, archived form. You may freely use, copy, and
distribute GWARV26.EXE provided that no fee is charged for such use,
copying or distribution. It is recommended and highly encouraged that
you upload the Global War archive to all of your favorite bulletin
boards and on-line services.
The Global War software, and the associated files are copyright (c) 1997
John Dailey, all rights reserved.
The distribution archive MUST be distributed in the format originally
released as GWARV26.EXE with the ARJ security envelope as created by the
author. If you should desire to distribute the Global War archive in
another archive format, please archive the GWARV26.EXE as one file
inside the other archive. Re-archival of the software as separate files
will not include the ARJ security envelope and invalidates your license
agreement to use this software.

░ Introduction/What Is Global War ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Global War is a fascinating strategic wargame for 3-6 players. The
object of the game is to conquer the world. It is not a difficult game
to play, but it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules
before getting involved in the game.
The world is divided up into 6 continents: Africa, Asia, Australia,
Europe, North America, and South America. Each of these continents is
divided up into several countries. There are 42 countries total. The
first player to conquer all 42 countries (the entire world) wins the
game.
Here is a list of the six continents and their countries.
North America Europe Asia Australia
Alaska France Afghanistan E. Australia
Alberta England China Borneo
Mexico Germany India New Guinea
E. U.S Scandinavia Irkutsk W. Australia
Greenland Italy Japan
Yukon Ukraine Kamchatka
Ontario Spain Iran
Quebec Mongolia
W. U.S. Africa Siam
Zaire Siberia
South America E. Africa Ural
Argentina Libya Taimyr
Brazil Madagascar
Peru W. Africa
Venezuela S. Africa
Note: The continents and countries were chosen to facilitate play rather
than to be geographically accurate.

░ Game Rating ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
As a service to parents, and because I feel that there is a great need
for parents to know what their children are doing in cyberspace, I've
included my own "rating" as to the content of this game. Please keep in
mind that this rating is STRICTLY my own opinion, and serves ONLY as a
guide for choosing whether or not your children should be allowed to
play this game. This rating may or may not apply to all children. In
my opinion, any individual that has been taught the difference between
fantasy and reality should enjoy this game, while at the same time NOT
going crazy with the minute amount of violence portrayed.
I have given this game a rating of "G" for General Audiences.
Conquering the world in Global War only involves "armies" of numeric
values battling against other armies. Game play can be likened to that
of the game of chess where players conquer other players pieces.
The software as written by myself contains no vulgar language or sexual
connotations.

░ Quick Installation ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Although I feel that, as a sysop, you should read the Global War
documentation from start to finish, I realize that by now, you're eager
to get Global War up and running. If you are upgrading from a previous
version of Global War, please refer to the section below on upgrading.
Whatever the case, the Global War documentation files have been laid out
so as to be excellent reference tools when you encounter problems.
This quick installation assumes that:
o You have a basic knowledge and understanding about DOS and
batch files.
o You have an understanding about your bulletin board software,
and how to call on-line software from it.
o You are installing Global War on a single-line system.
If you do not meet all of the above requirements, please refer to the
section "Installing Global War For The First Time" for a complete
walkthrough of the installation process.
For sysops who will be utilizing Global War in multi-node, it is
recommended that you at least install and try out the software with one
node first before attempting a multi-node setup.
Global War must be executed in its own subdirectory. Your BBS ideally
should call a batch file which should change to this subdirectory,
execute the game, change back to your BBS subdirectory, and return to
your BBS. If your BBS can't execute a batch file, you may have to run
the game from your main BBS subdirectory.
To install the Global War software follow these easy steps:
1. Make a subdirectory anywhere on your hard disk to contain the
GLOBAL WAR game (C:\BBS\GWAR for example). Put all the files
in the GLOBAL WAR archive into this directory except WAR.BAT,
which you should copy into your main BBS directory (C:\BBS for
example). Again, make sure the ARJ-SECURITY ENVELOPE is
present and valid.
2. Edit WAR.CFG, following the instructions found in that file.
Page 7
3. Now change back to your main BBS directory. You will need to
edit WAR.BAT to tell Global War what type of BBS software
you're using. Global War will work with PCBoard, Wildcat, RBBS,
WWIV, QuickBBS, RA Spitfire, Searchlight, TAG, Telegard, GAP,
Maximus, Genesis Deluxe, and any other BBS program that can run
doors made for any of these BBSs. See an example batch file
below:
@ECHO OFF
CD\BBS\GWAR
WAR.EXE /W C:\BBS\CHAIN.TXT
CD\BBS
4. Add the following menu option to your on-line software menu:
Global War 2.6
5. Test out the software to make sure everything is working
properly, and you're all set! You can run Global War at this
point from the DOS command line in local mode (without a BBS
dropfile) by utilizing the included LOCAL.BAT batch file:
LOCAL.BAT <firstname> <lastname>
at the DOS prompt.
Installation of the Global War software is now complete.
Page 8

░ Upgrading From Previous Versions ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
To upgrade from a previous version of Global War, follow these easy to
follow steps below. Your existing games will continue uninterrupted,
and you can enjoy the new features of Global War version 2.6 if you
follow these steps:
1. Backup your current Global War setup.
2. Unzip this archive into a temporary subdirectory.
3. Copy (replace) all of the files in your Global War subdirectory
with the new ones contained in this archive EXCEPT the
following files:
WAR.BAT (whatever your batch file that starts Global War)
WAR.CFG
4. Temporarily save your old WAR.CFG file by renaming it to
something else.
5. Copy WAR.CFG to your Global War subdirectory.
6. Edit the new WAR.CFG file using your old one as an example.
You may notice that there are several new items, and some may
have been removed. Detailed explanations for the new options
can be found at the end of WAR.CFG.
DO NOT try to use your old WAR.CFG file or you'll get runtime
errors and may even lose data!

░ Tips For Running On-line ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Although I can't guarantee that Global War will be an instant success on
your system, I honestly believe that in time it will become popular if
your users just take a moment to check it out. Here are just a few tips
for getting Global War more active, in order of importance:
o State in your "news" file that you are now running Global War
on-line. If your players don't know you have the game on-line,
they may never check it out.
o Make Global War easy to get to on your BBS. In other words,
try to keep getting to the door more simple than having to
shuffle through 6 menus to get to it. An even better option is
to setup Global War to be ran from your main menu.
o Hundreds of players in one on-line game is much better than
hundreds of on-line games with one player in each. In other
words, avoid installing too many on-line games on your system.
This goes with all on-line software, and not just Global War.
o If you're a local player, try to keep from playing the game.
Sysops that play their own on-line games tend to become
powerful players simply because they can take their turn each
day with little opposition. Users on your system may become
upset and quit if they find out you are playing.
If you insist on playing, don't let anyone know you are
playing, and most of all, don't cheat!
Page 10
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
░ Installing Global War For The First Time ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
I have attempted, through experience with setting up many on-line
software packages, to make the Global War software install as easily, as
understandably, in as short amount of time, and with as little help or
input from the sysop as possible.
The sample configuration files that I've included with the archive
should be sufficient for most systems, but you are more than welcome and
able to modify it in any way you see fit.
This installation documentation assumes that:
o You have a basic knowledge and understanding about DOS and
batch files.
o You have an understanding about your bulletin board software,
and how to call on-line software from it.
Before beginning the installation process, I suggest that you print out
this documentation in its entirety. The documentation file itself has
been formatted to print out on standard letter sized paper. To print
the documentation from the DOS prompt, setup your printer and issue the
following command:
COPY GWAR.DOC PRN
Global War must be executed in its own subdirectory. Your BBS ideally
should call a batch file which should change to this subdirectory,
execute the game, change back to your BBS subdirectory, and return to
your BBS. If your BBS can't execute a batch file, you may have to run
the game from your main BBS subdirectory.
To install the Global War software, follow these easy steps:
Assuming you have a directory C:\BBS\GWAR, and the Global War
archive is in C:\DOWNLOADS, the following commands will
accomplish this step:
C:
CD\BBS\GWAR
C:\DOWNLOADS\GWARV26.EXE
Page 11
Or
C:
COPY C:\DOWNLODAS\GWARV26.EXE C:\BBS\GWAR
CD\TEMP
GWARV26.EXE
2. Edit WAR.CFG, following the instructions found in that file or
refer to the section covering the Global War configuration file
below.
See an example batch file
below:
@ECHO OFF
CD\BBS\GWAR
WAR.EXE /W C:\BBS\CHAIN.TXT
CD\BBS
4. Add the following menu option to your on-line software menu:
Global War 2.6
5. Test out the software to make sure everything is working
properly, and you're all set! You can run Global War at this
point from the DOS command line in local mode (without a BBS
dropfile) by utilizing the included LOCAL.BAT batch file:
LOCAL.BAT <firstname> <lastname>
at the DOS prompt.
6. Test out the software from your BBS to make sure everyting is
working properly, and you're all set.
Installation of the Global War software is now complete.
Page 12
Monochrome Monitors
If you will be playing Global War locally and are utilizing a monochrome
monitor, you'll also need to replace the WAR.IMG data file with the
WAR.MON file.
Specifying an alternate games directory
You may specify an alternate subdirectory in which to store the game
data files and high score files. This is useful if you want to run
multiple sets of games, such as a beginner, intermediate, and expert
series. To specify an alternate games directory, use the /A switch
followed by the desired subdirectory name. For example:
WAR /A C:\GWAR\EXPERT /p \bbs\pcboard.sys

It is very important that you do not insert or delete lines from the
default configuration file outline.
Global War expects to find the values it is looking for on specific
lines. Your registration number MUST be on LINE 1, your BBS name MUST be
on LINE 2, etc. You must be very careful not to insert or delete any
lines when editing this file, which will cause the values that Global
War is reading to be on the wrong line numbers. When upgrading to newer
versions of Global War, be sure to use the new WAR.CFG file that comes
with the new version. Edit it using your old WAR.CFG as a reference.
You may edit the values above, and comments may follow any of the values
as long as you leave at least 1 space after the value. Lines 60 and on
are ignored, so you may leave these comments in this file if desired.
If you have not registered Global War, the default values shown in
parenthesis above will be used (Maximum Number of Games Per Player = 1
on line 4 for example), regardless of what you change them to.
LINE 1: Your registration number
If you decide to register Global War, you will receive a Registration
Number. (Please read the file REGISTER.DOC for info on how to register
Global War). Edit line 1 and type your registration number here. Make
sure the number is typed correctly. A valid registration number will
allow you to configure the "Games Allowed", "Games per player", "Hours
between turns", "Auto-delete days", "Players allowed to begin games"
and "Allow Non-Sequential Play" values, otherwise the default values
in parenthesis will be used regardless of what you change them to.
Note: Global War will work indefinitely without a valid registration
number here. It will NOT quit working, format your hard disk, crash,
lock up, or cause any harm to your system just because you haven't
registered. The reason some of the values are not configurable is
simply to provide an incentive to register the software.
LINE 2: Sysop's Name or BBS name
Enter the Sysop's first and last name here (or BBS name). If you have
registered Global War, your name must appear EXACTLY as you specified
it on your registration form.
LINE 3: Max Games Allowed (Must be 255 or less)
This is the highest game number allowed, or the total number of Global
War games that may be playing at any one time. You may have from 1 to
255 games. If you lower this value at some future date, you may have
to rename some of the data files (WARxx.DAT, WARxx.MSG, WARxx.REC &
WARxx.LOG) so that the game number (xx) is less than or equal to this
new value, or Global War will no longer be able to find the game.
Setting this value too high will slow down the game. Set it a bit
higher than the number of games you anticipate having. A good value
is around 30.
Page 15
LINE 4: Max Games per player (Must be 255 or less)
This is the total number of active games a player may be in at any
time. An active game is one that is under way, or one this is waiting
for more players to sign up. Recommended value: 4 or 5. If you have
not registered your copy of Global War, only 1 game will be allowed
per player regardless of what you set this to.
LINE 5: Minutes allowed in the game per day
This will allow you to limit the amount of time each player can spend
in the door per day. The amount of time the player will be allowed is
determined like this: GW takes the number of minutes remaining in the
BBS and compares it with this value and uses whichever is less. If
the player has already played GW today, the total time already used
today is subtracted. Example: The player has 30 minutes left in the
BBS. This value is set to 20 minutes. GW will select the 20 minute
value since it is smaller. This player has already spent 5 minutes in
the game. The 5 minutes used is subtracted from the 20 minutes
allowed leaving this player with 15 more minutes in the game today.
LINE 6: Minimum hours between turns
Every player in Global War gets 1 turn per calendar day. A problem
arises around midnight however. A player could take a turn shortly
before midnight, and take another shortly after midnight, giving him
the unfair advantage of 2 turns in a row. This value will prevent
this from happening. Players get 1 turn per day, AND at least this
many hours must have elapsed since their last turn. Recommended
value: 12 If you have not registered your copy of Global War, a value
of 1 hour will be used here, regardless of what you set it to.
LINE 7: Auto-Delete Completed Games after this many days
When someone wins a game, the game gets deleted so that it can be
re-used. It isn't desireable that the game be deleted right away,
however. The other players in the game need to be given a chance to
call and see who won. This controls when the game does get deleted.
The game will be deleted this many days after it ends. Recommend
value: 7 Unregistered, Global War will use 3 days here.
LINE 8: Are players allowed to begin new games? (Y or N)
If this value is set to "Y", players will be allowed to start new
games and join games waiting to start. If set to "N", players will
not be allowed to begin any new games, nor will they be allowed to
join any games waiting to start. This can be used as a sort of "demo"
mode to allow unvalidated callers to examine the door without being
allowed to play. To do this, install Global War twice on your BBS.
Create two WAR.CFG files, one with this option set to Y, the other N.
Install Global War twice on your BBS, using the /N switch to specify
the desired WAR.CFG file, and set the security levels accordingly.
Page 16
LINE 9: Communications driver type (A, F, D, or U)
A : Auto-Detect. Global War will first look to see if you have a
Digiboard device driver installed. If found, it will be used. If
one is not found, Global War will check to see if a FOSSIL driver
is installed. If found, it will be used. If a FOSSIL is not
found, Global War will communicate directly with your computer's
UART chip. NOTE: Auto-Detect may get confused and fail on some
computers running on a LAN. If so, set the driver type to Uart,
Fossil, or Digiboard (U, F, or D) instead.
F : FOSSIL. Force Global War to use a FOSSIL driver. A FOSSIL
driver must be installed. Supports COM1 - COM16.
D : DigiBoard. Force Global War to use the DigiBoard device
driver. A Digiboard card and device driver must be installed.
Digiboard support is provided for COM1-COM32.
U : UART. Force Global War to communicate directly with your
computer's UART chip. Supports COM1-COM8. See lines 40-47
for info on configuring base address and IRQ settings.
LINE 10: Fortifications allowed in Normal Games (-1 to 99)
After a player finishes attacking, he may optionally fortify a
country. You can set the maximum number of fortification moves each
player is allowed to make in all games to any desired number from 0 to
99. If you set this value to -1, the player who begins a new game will
be asked how many fortification moves will be allowed in this game.
This is the preferred option. NOTE: Changing this value will not
affect existing games, only new games created after this value is
changed.
LINE 11: Fortifications allowed in Team Games (-1 to 99)
Same as LINE 10, except this is for Team Games. -1 is preferred.
LINE 12: Maximum number of countries a player can give to his partner
In Team games that use Unlimited Fortifications, this allows you to
limit the number of countries that a player can give to his partner
during his fortification move. Setting this value too high will allow
partners to swap entire continents and collect enormous numbers of
armies. I recommend setting this limit to something like 1 to 4
countries.
Page 17
LINE 13: Maximum number of days since player's last turn
The number of armies a player collects at the beginning of their turn
is calculated using the following formula: [(countries / 3) +
continent bonus] x days since last call + commendations. Occasionally,
a player may decide not to play for several days. Their plan is to
hold off playing, then finally collect several day's worth of armies
and try to catch the other players off guard. A player who
intentionally (or unintentionally) doesn't play for a long period of
time is referred to as a "TimeBomb player". Many Sysops (myself
included) consider the TimeBomb tactic to be a legitimate strategy.
Many other Sysops consider it unfair that a player can win a game in
which he has only played a couple of turns. This option will allow
you to set a limit to the number of days that a TimeBomb player will
receive armies for. For example, if you set this limit to 4 days, and
the TimeBomb player doesn't play for 6 days, he will only receive 4
day's worth of armies. Recommended settings: If you want to allow
TimeBomb play, set this value very high (100 days). If you do not
like TimeBomb play, set the limit somewhere between 2 and 5 days.
LINE 14: Screen writes, BIOS or Direct (B or D)
Direct screen writes are faster and normally are preferred. If you
have problems with text "bleeding" outside of a window under a
multitasker try switching to Bios screen writes.
LINE 15: Auto-Delete Forgotten Games after this many days
If there is no activity in a game (nobody takes a turn, signs up to
play the game, etc) in over this amount of time (in days) the game
will be considered "forgotten" and will be deleted. Setting this
value too low is a great way to delete all your games! I recommend no
less than 7 days. If GW finds some absurd value here it will default
to 7 days to prevent all your games from disappearing. Recommended
value: 7 to 14
LINE 16: Multi-Node BBS? Y/N
Set to "Y" if you are running more than one node on your BBS, set to
"N" if you have 1 node. When set to "Y", Global War will create
temporary files (WARxx.LOK) to lock out games in use by other nodes.
Note: lines 17-29 deal with scoring.
These values must all be positive integers (no decimal points) and
should be kept small (don't award a billion points for example).
Everybody has a different opinion on how scoring should be weighted,
so use whatever you think is fair, however I URGE YOU TO LEAVE ALL
THESE VALUES AS THEY ARE. The default values were arrived at after
months of debate, discussion, trial, error, blood, sweat, tears, etc.
You may want to edit line 29 later on though. See below.
LINE 17: The number of points awarded to the winner of a 3 player game
A player who wins a normal game with 3 players is awarded this many
points.
LINE 18: The number of points awarded to the winner of a 4 player game
A player who wins a normal game with 4 players is awarded this many
points.
Page 18
LINE 19: The number of points awarded to the winner of a 5 player game
A player who wins a normal game with 5 players is awarded this many
points.
LINE 20: The number of points awarded to the winner of a 6 player game
A player who wins a normal game with 6 players is awarded this many
points.
LINE 21: Team game with 1 surviving partner: Surviving partner's points
If a Team game ends with only 1 partner on the winning team surviving,
this partner is awarded this many points. This player's partner is
awarded the value on line 22.
LINE 22: Team game with 1 surviving partner: Dead partner's points
If a Team game ends with only 1 partner on the winning team surviving,
the non-surviving partner on the winning team is awarded this many
points. The surviving partner is awarded the value on line 21.
LINE 23: Team game with both surviving partners: Partner who won's
points.
If a Team game ends with both partners on the winning team surviving,
the partner who won the game is awarded this many points. The other
partner is awarded the value on line 24.
LINE 24: Team game with both surviving partners: Other partner's points
If a Team game ends with both partners on the winning team surviving,
the partner who didn't win the game is awarded this many points. The
other partner is awarded the value on line 23.
LINE 25: Points for eliminating a player from a normal game
A player is awarded this many points every time he eliminates another
player from a normal game. The eliminated player loses the number of
points specified on line 28.
LINE 26: Points for eliminating player from team game: Partner who
eliminated.
In a team game, when one partner eliminates another player, the
partner who eliminated the player is awarded this many points. The
other partner is awarded the number of points specified in line 27.
The eliminated player loses the number of points specified on line 28.
LINE 27: Points for eliminating a player from a team game: other
partner.
In a team game, when one partner eliminates another player, the
partner's partner is awarded this many points. The other partner is
awarded the number of points specified on line 26. The eliminated
player loses the number of points specified on line 28
LINE 28: Points SUBTRACTED for getting eliminated from any game
When a player is eliminated from any game, this many points are
subtracted from the player's score. This value should be positive or
zero.
Page 19
LINE 29: Points required to advance a rank
The number of points required for each rank advancement. Consider
raising this value when players obtain the rank of 5 Star General or
higher, or delete your WINNERS.WAR to reset the rankings. Also see
Line 35.
LINE 30: Lower limit in rankings
This is the lowest score allowed in the rankings. If a player has
this score or lower, his name will be deleted from the ranking file,
which will essentially set their score to zero. This value should be
negative or zero. I recommend either 0 or -999 depending on whether
you like negative scores.
LINE 31: Number of days before player can play AWOL partner's turns
Team games only: If a player's partner hasn't taken a turn in over
this many days, the player will be given an opportunity to play his
partner's turn for him. Recommended value: 2 Set high (100 is good)
to disallow players from playing their partner's turns if desired.
LINE 32: Allow hidden names? (H, K or P)
When player names are "Known", players are referred to by their real
names. In games with "Hidden" names, players are referred to as
"Player 1", "Player 2", "Player 3" etc, while they are still playing.
When they are eliminated from the game, their names become known. In
Team games, players always know their partner's name. All names
become known when a game ends. This option allows you to enable or
disable the Hidden Name feature.
H : Force all new games to use Hidden player names.
K : Force all new games to use Known player names.
P : Allow players to decide if they want Hidden or Known.
(recommended)
LINE 33: Allow Surrender Option? (Y/N/1)
This option will allow a player to surrender to another player. When
a player surrenders, all of his countries, armies, and commendations
are turned over to the player he surrenders to. The player loses the
number of points specified on line 34. The player he surrenders to is
awarded the number of points specified on lines 25 or 26. If the
surrender causes the game to end, the player he surrendered to will
also be credited with winning the game and will be awarded the
appropriate number of points (and also his partner if it's a team
game). You can configure the surrender option one of 3 ways:
Y : Allow any player to surrender to any other player at any time.
Caution: If you decide to use this option, I recommend setting
line 30 to -999. If line 30 is 0, a player could boost
another players rank without affecting his own rank by
repeatedly surrendering to that player. This option allows
the player to choose who he will surrender to if there is more
than one opponent in the game.
N : Completely disable the surrender option in all games at all
times.
1 : Allow a player to surrender IF AND ONLY IF there is only one
opposing player or one opposing team remaining. This is the
preferred option.
Page 20
LINE 34: Points SUBTRACTED for surrendering in any game.
If a player surrenders the game to another player, this many points
are subtracted from the player's score. The value should be positive
or zero.
LINE 35: Reset rankings file (winners.war) at this many points.
This will allow you to reset (delete) your rankings file (winners.war)
when a player reaches this many points. Winners.war is deleted, but
a backup copy of it saved as WINNERS.TOP. You, or third party
utilities, can use WINNERS.TOP to generate some sort of Hall of Fame
list if desired. Recommended value: I like to reset my rankings
whenever a player reaches the rank of 5 Star General. There are a
total of 20 ranks, so I recommend setting this value to 20 times the
value you have on line 29.
LINE 36: Enable [ENTER]=All prompts? Y/N
Y : Enable ENTER=ALL prompts. When asked how many armies to move from
one country to another, players may press ENTER to move the
maximum number of armies allowed. Preferred.
N : Disable ENTER=ALL prompts. Useful if line noise is a problem in
your area, or if your players tend to be careless and would prefer
not to have the ENTER=ALL prompts.
LINE 37: Allow Non-Sequential Play games? A/N/P
In previous versions of Global War, turns always consisted of a
Deployment phase, followed by an optional Attack phase, and ended with
an optional Fortification phase. This type of game is now called a
"Sequential Play" game. A new "Non-Sequential Play" option is now
available in version 2.40. This option allows players to freely mix
the three phases at will. For example, players may start out by
Attacking, then Fortify, then Deploy, then Attack some more, and so
on. Your configuration Options are:
A : Force all new games to use Non-Sequential Play.
N : No Non-Sequential Play games allowed. Forces all new games to
be Sequential Play games.
P : Allow the player who begins a new game to choose Sequential
or Non-Sequential play for his game. (preferred).
Note: If you have not registered your copy of Global War, this value
is not configurable. A value of "N" will be used regardless of what
you set it to.
LINE 38: Enable mouse when in local mode? Y/N
Y : Allow Sysop to play using a mouse in local mode (mouse driver must
be installed).
N : Disable local mouse support, even if a mouse and driver are
installed. Use this if you're experiencing some sort of incurable
mouse problem.
Page 21
LINE 39: Commendation values Suggested values: 4 6 8 10 12 15
NOTE: COMMENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THIS LINE!
You may specify how many armies a player will obtain in exchange for
each set of commendations. Using the suggested values as an example,
the first set turned in will be worth 4 armies, the second set is
worth 6, the third set 8, 4th 10, 5th 12, and 6th 15. When there are
no more values specified, the count will automatically go up 5 armies
per set, making the 7th set worth 20, the 8th set worth 25, and so on.
You may specify as many values as you like (seperated by spaces)
provided the length of line 39 does not exceed 255 characters.
WARNING: The lower you make these values, the longer it will take to
complete a game. If you lower them too much, the game may never end.
Raising these values will shorten the game.
LINE 40: COM1 BaseAddress,IRQ (Standard setting: 3F8,4)
LINE 41: COM2 BaseAddress,IRQ (Standard setting: 2F8,3)
LINE 42: COM3 BaseAddress,IRQ (Standard setting: 3E8,4)
LINE 43: COM4 BaseAddress,IRQ (Standard setting: 2E8,3)
LINE 44: COM5 BaseAddress,IRQ (Standard setting: 4220,3)
LINE 45: COM6 BaseAddress,IRQ (Standard setting: 4228,3)
LINE 46: COM7 BaseAddress,IRQ (Standard setting: 5220,3)
LINE 47: COM8 BaseAddress,IRQ (Standard setting: 5228,3)
These eight lines allow you to configure the Base Address and IRQ
(Interrupt Request) for Communication Ports 1 through 8 when using the
UART driver. Lines 40-47 are ignored if you are using the FOSSIL or
Digiboard driver - see line 9 for more info. FOSSIL support is
provided for COM1-COM16. UART support is provided for COM1-COM8.
Digiboard support is provided for COM1-COM32. All values are in
hexadecimal, which means you enter 1 through 9 for IRQs 1 through 9,
enter A for IRQ10, B for IRQ11, C for IRQ12, D for IRQ13, E for IRQ14,
or F for IRQ15. It's highly recommended that you don't mess with these
unless you are sure you know what the values are. The most common use
for these is if you are running more than 2 modems in one PC. For
example, you could run 4 modems in one PC with an ISA BUS by setting
COM3 to use IRQ5 and COM4 to use IRQ7 on your serial card or internal
modem, and setting line 42 to 3E8,5 and Line 43 to 2E8,7. Remember,
each individual card in a PC must use a different IRQ or you'll get
interrupt conflicts (lockups).
LINES 48-52: Bulletin files to display
You may specify up to 5 bulletin files for callers to read here. These
files will be available for callers to view at the Global War main
menu. The lines must consist of a filename (with path if the file is
not in the same directory as war.exe), followed by at least one space,
followed by a description. The first character of this description
must be followed by a colon, and the players will select this letter
to display the file. Do not use the letters I, T, R, P, S, B or Q as
they are already used on Global War's main menu. If the file's
extension is .ANS, the entire file will be displayed without any
pausing. If it's extension is anything else, the file will be read a
line at a time and displayed one screen at a time.
Page 22
LINES 53-58: Continent Bonuses
You may configure the number of bonus armies a player collects if he
occupies an entire continent at the beginning of his turn. Recommended
values are Africa=3, Asia=7, Australia=2, Europe=5, N. America=5, and
S. America=2.
LINE 59: Allow Direct Fortifications? (A/N/P) (P recommended)
Enabling Direct Fortifications allows a player to fortify armies from
one country directly to any other country, provided he occupies both
countries and all countries in between so as to form a continuous
chain of connected countries. The move is counted as 1 fortification
move regardless of the distance between the countries. With Direct
Fortifications disabled, fortifications can only occur between the
player's adjacent countries, with each fortification counting as one
move. A : All games will use Direct Fortifications N : No games will
use Direct Fortifications. Disables Direct Fortifications in all
games. P : Allows a player to choose if he wants Direct Fortifications
enabled or disabled (for that game only) when he begins a new game.
Page 23
Locking Out Users
Sysops may quickly and easily lockout players from creating Global War
games by including their name(s) in a the file LOCKOUT.WAR located in
the main Global War directory. This file is a plain ASCII text file
with one player name per line. Lines beginning with a semi-colon (;)
are ignored. An example LOCKOUT.WAR is included below:
;Players whose names are listed in this file will not be allowed
;to begin or join in any new games. Names are not case sensitive.
;List players one name per line. You may delete this file if it
;is not desired.

1 2 3 4 5
The information is:
1. The player's name exactly as it was passed to Global War from
the BBS.
2. The amount of time the player has left in minutes. The player
will receive a warning when he has less than 5 minutes left,
and the door will drop carrier & return to the BBS if he runs
out of time.
3. The current date and time.
4. The amount of free memory remaining.
5. The <flags> are as follows:
Local The door is operating in Local Mode - no
communications I/O.
COMx The door is operating on Com1, Com2, Com3, or Com4
Fossil A FOSSIL driver is being used for all comm I/O.
Digiboard A Digiboard driver is being used for all comm I/O.
Uart All comm I/O is being performed directly through the
UART.
GWTerm The current player is using the GWTerm terminal
program. GWTerm in an optional terminal program
your callers can use to greatly speed up game play
by displaying maps instantly on their screen.
Mnode Multi-Node switch is set in WAR.CFG. The door will

Multi-Node support
Global War includes support for multi-node BBSs. Global War will create
temporary files named WARxx.LOK (where xx is a game number 1-255) to
indicate that a game is in use by another node. To set up Global War for
multi-node use, you should do the following:
In your AUTOEXEC.BAT, you should add:
CD\BBS\GWAR (or whatever your Global War subdirectory is)
DELETE *.LOK (delete all LOK files)
This is to make sure no stray WARxx.LOK files are lying around.
Page 26
You may need to create different WAR.CFG files for each node. If so, I
recommend naming them WAR1.CFG, WAR2.CFG, etc. Then, in your WAR.BAT
file, copy the appropriate WARx.CFG file to WAR.CFG. For example:
(sample WAR1.BAT for node 1, use a different batch file for each node)
CD\BBS\GLOBLWAR
COPY WAR1.CFG WAR.CFG <- or WAR2.CFG for node 2, etc
WAR /P \BBS\PCBOARD.SYS
CD\BBS
Alternately, you may use the /N command line switch to specify an
alternate WAR.CFG file. For example:
CD\BBS\GLOBLWAR
WAR /P \BBS\PCBOARD.SYS /N WAR1.CFG
CD\BBS ^^^^^^^^^^^ specifies alternate WAR.CFG
Make sure the Multi-Node option is set to "Y" in WAR.CFG.

Games that are "in progress" are closed to new players. You may S:elect
these games for viewing, however you cannot join a game once it's under
way.
Games that "need more players" are open to new players. You may sign up
to play in these games by S:electing the game. After selecting one of
these games you will be given the opportunity to vote on whether to
start the game or wait for more players to sign up. A game will start
under the following circumstances:
The minimum number of players required (determined by the player who
created the game) have signed up to play, and ALL players vote to start.
The maximum number of players allowed (determined by the player who
created the game) have signed up to play.
You may also R:emove your name from a game before it starts, or change
your vote any time you like. NOTE: The only way to tell that a game has
started is that the game number will move from the "need more players"
list to the "in progress" list.
You may create a new game by selecting "B:egin a new game". You will be
given several options regarding how many players you will allow, whether
the player's names will be hidden or known, whether you want the game to
be a Normal game or a Team game, how many fortifications, and so on.
Other players may then sign up to play in this game, and it will
eventually start as just described.
When a game starts, the 42 countries on the map will be randomly
assigned to each player. Each country will receive 3 armies.
NOTE: Since 42 countries are not evenly divisible by 4 or 5 players,
some players in 4 and 5 player games will be given an extra day (and
thus three additional armies to deploy) to make up for being given one
less country than the other players receive.

░ Playing Global War ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Each player gets 1 turn per day. If a player doesn't play on a given
day, he forfeits his turn for that day, however he will still get
credited with armies due to him (more on this later).
Each turn consists of 4 parts:
I. COLLECTING YOUR ARMIES
At the beginning of every turn you will collect a certain amount of
armies. The number of armies you get is determined like this:
[(countries/3) + continent bonus] x days since last call + commendation
Where:
"countries" are the total number of countries you occupy.
"continent bonus" are bonus armies you get for occupying all of the
countries that make up a continent.
N. America = 5 armies Asia = 7 armies
S. America = 2 armies Europe = 5 armies
Africa = 3 armies Australia = 2 armies
"days since last call" is the number of days since your last turn.
"commendation" are armies you get for turning in a Set of
Commendations.
What's a Commendation?
You earn a commendation at the end of every turn in which you
successfully conquer a country. These commendations can be issued by
the King, the Queen, or the General. If you acquire 3 commendations from
any one leader, or one from each of the three leaders, you now have a
"Set" of Commendations which you MAY exchange for additional armies at
this time. If you receive five commendations, you are guaranteed to
have a Set, and you MUST exchange your Set for armies. The value of
these commendations increase over time. The first set of commendations
turned in is worth 4 armies, the second set is worth 6, third is worth
8, then 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, etc. A "Set" refers to a set of 3
commendations turned in by ANY player.
Page 29
II. DEPLOYING YOUR ARMIES
After collecting your armies you will then place them on any countries
that you occupy. The game will ask you for the name of a country, and
how many armies to place there, and will continue doing this until all
of your armies are deployed. Once you deploy armies, there's no
changing your mind, so give this some thought first!
III. ATTACK YOUR ENEMIES
This part is optional. You may now attack any opponent's country
adjacent to your own, from your own country, as long as you have a
minimum of two armies on it, regardless of how many armies your opponent
has. Countries connected by bright white lines are considered adjacent
and battles can occur between them (for example, West Africa can attack
Brazil in addition to Spain, Italy, Libya, E. Africa & Zaire).
After selecting A:ttack, you will be asked what country you wish to
attack from, and which country you wish to attack. You must have at
least 2 armies on a country in order to attack. The computer will
determine the outcome of the battle. NOTE: When asked for the name of
the country to attack or attack from, you don't have to type in the
entire name, only the first few characters. For example, if you want to
attack Madagascar, you only need type "MADAG" or "MAD". Also, GLOBAL
WAR ignores spaces and periods in a country name, so in place of "W.
Australia" you may type "wau", for example.
The outcome of the battle is determined by a "dice" roll (the "dice" are
random numbers of course). The attacker will roll up to 3 dice, one for
each attacking army. The attacker must leave at least 1 army behind if
he conquers a country, so one of his armies cannot be used for attack.
Therefore, the number of dice he rolls is 1 less than the number of
armies on the attacking country, up to the maximum of 3 dice. The
defender will roll up to 2 dice (1 die if he has only 1 army).
The outcome of the battle is determined by comparing the highest dice
each has rolled. If the attacker's die is higher, the defender loses an
army from the country under attack. If the defender's die is the same
or higher, the attacker loses an army from the attacking country. The
process is repeated for the second pair of dice (if there is one). The
computer will do all the dice rolling and determine the outcome of each
battle, so you don't need to be too concerned with this right now.
If you destroy all of the armies in your opponent's country, you must
then occupy it immediately by moving some of your armies (at least 1)
from your attacking country to the conquered country. You must leave at
least 1 army behind, since no country can be left unoccupied at any
time. If you eliminate a player's last country, (thus eliminating him
from the game) the former opponent's commendations become yours. If you
now have 1 or more sets of Commendations, you may exchange them (you
must exchange a set if you have 5 or more Commendations) for additional
armies at this time, then continue your turn.
Page 30
You may attack whatever adjacent countries you wish, as many times as
you wish. For example, you may attack one or more times from one
country, shift to another country and then back to the original.
IV. FORTIFY YOUR COUNTRIES
When you are finished attacking, you may fortify your defensive
position. If desired, you may move any number of armies from one of your
countries to any other country which you also occupy, provided you
occupy all countries connecting the two. The player who creates a game
will determine how many of these fortification plays are allowed. You
must leave at least 1 army behind.
There are two options available which determine the order in which the
Deployment, Attack, and Fortification plays are made. In "Sequential
Play" games, the Deployment play is made first, then the optional Attack
play, and finally the optional Fortification play. In "Non-Sequential
Play" games, you may Deploy, Attack and Fortify in any order, and you
may freely mix the plays at will.
Play continues until one player conquers the entire world. Points are
earned for eliminating other players from the game, and for winning the
game. The number of points earned determines each player's rank.
At any time during the game, the following commands are available:
S:how player info
This will list all the players currently in the game, how many
countries they occupy, continents occupied, how many days since they
last played a turn, when they are eligible to take their next turn,
and how many Commendations they hold. Note: You can only see HOW
MANY Commendations they hold. Who the Commendations are from is
private.
W:orld Report
This command will list all the continents and countries on the
globe, who occupies them, and how many armies are on each country.
This will show you at a glance where all your (and everyone else's)
countries are.
N:ews Report
This will show you the game history (who did what and when). Three
different types of news reports are available. C:omplete news will
list the entire history of the game since it began. N:ew news will
show you what happened since you took your last turn. D:ays ago will
show what happened since a number of days ago.

░ Strategy Hints For Advanced Global War Players ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Although many players develop their own strategies for playing Global
War successfully, here are a few general guidelines that you may find
useful during play.
Q. Where should I deploy my armies?
A. Usually you will be attacking your opponents with the goal of
conquering an entire continent. You will probably want to deploy
some or all of your armies on the countries from which you want to
attack. You may also want to defend your countries from attack by
your opponents, particularly if you occupy a continent. An
alternative strategy is to place armies right behind your border as
a second line of defense. Another good defensive move is to prevent
your opponents from conquering an entire continent. By capturing at
least 1 country from your opponent's continent, you will prevent
your opponent from collecting his bonus armies on his next turn.
Q. Should I turn in my Set of Commendations or wait?
A. There are several reasons why you might want to hold on to your Set
of Commendations. The value of your Set of Commendations increases
over time. The first Set of Commendations turned in is worth 4
armies, the second Set is worth 6, third is worth 8, then 10, 12,
15, 20, 25, etc. Remember, a "Set" refers to a set of 3
Commendations (1 from each of the 3 leaders, or 3 from any 1 leader)
turned in by ANY player. Another reason is that you may not need
the armies right now. Saving the Commendations for later would be
clearly advantageous.
Q. Should I always attack during my turn?
A. Attacking almost always costs you armies and therefore your
position. Sometimes not attacking is necessary when you have to
build up your defenses. If you avoid attacking and instead place
your armies in defensive positions, you may create a considerably
stronger attacking force for your next turn. If your opponents are
attacking each other, why not just sit back and wait for them to
deplete each other's forces?
Page 33
Q. I can attack several times during my turn. When should I stop?
The disadvantage of attacking is that you lose armies as you gain
countries, and your armies get dispersed over a larger area. This
can severely weaken your position and allow your opponent to easily
conquer your weakened countries. It is clearly advantageous to
conquer at least 1 country per turn in order to earn a Commendation,
which you can later exchange for additional armies. In general, you
should stop attacking before your front line becomes too weak to
repel attacks.
Q. When I conquer a country, how many armies should I move into it?
A. Usually all but 1, but it depends on the strengths of your
opponent's adjacent countries. Try to keep as many of your armies
towards the front lines as possible, where they can be used for
battle.

░ Registration Information ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
As a software developer, I take pride in my efforts to produce high
quality shareware. In order to do so, some of my software requires a
small registration fee.
Global War has been developed and tested for over seven years, and is
being released under the Shareware concept, which encourages the users
of a program to register that software after a trial period of
approximately 60 days and continued use thereafter.
To encourage registration, some basic elements of the game not required
for it to work properly have been disabled. Until the Global War
software has been registered, the following items will affect game play:
o Maximum games allowed is nine.
o Maximum games per player is one.
o Minimum number of hours between turns is one.
o Completed games are auto-deleted in three days.
o Players will always be allowed to start new games.
o Non-sequential games aren't allowed.
By registering and supporting quality shareware such as this, you are
making the Global War software bigger, better, and more enjoyable for
you and your users.
Upon receipt of your registration for the Global War software, you will
receive a unique, individual registration code (with instructions),
which is easily used to make the game executable registered.
Registration of the Global War software will entitle you to FREE
UPDATES. All you'll need to do is acquire the update software package
and incorporate your registration code.
Registration will also activate all registered-only features of the
program and remove all unregistered delays and nag screens. Your name
and registration number will also appear to you and your users as the
game is executed.
Page 36
If you are unhappy with any part of the Global War software, either with
it's operation, or the software itself, please do not send in your
registration expecting it to function more to your liking. Remember
that the great concept of shareware is "try before you buy." You know
exactly what you will receive before you pay for it.
If you are having problems, please don't hesitate to contact me before
giving up or registering the software. I fully support the software for
anyone whether they have or have not registered the Global War software.
The Global War software can be registered for both sysop BBS and
personal use. If you don't operate a BBS, you can still register the
Global War software for your personal use.
You may currently register John Dailey's Global War via pre-paid check,
money order or cash in US funds only. In addition, you may register via
your Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express credit card either
by mail or online registration.
For further information and instructions on registration of any part of
Global War, please refer to the file "REGISTER.DOC" located in the
documentation directory after installation.
Upon receipt of your registration, it will be processed as soon as
possible, and a registration keycode, with instructions on how to
register your copy of Global War, will be sent along with it.
If by postal mail, please allow at least two to three weeks from the
time you mail your registration to the time you receive your
registration information back.

░ Appendix A - Important Notes ░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Although not necessarily important for sysops to know, I feel that there
are a few points of the Global War operating specifies that may need to
be brought to your attention. These notes may help troubleshoot any
problems that you may encounter and aren't listed in Appendix C.
ANSI Driver
Please note that the ANSI driver is *NOT* needed to be installed on
your system in order to enjoy the full-blown ANSI graphics provided
by Global War. The software contains its own ANSI capabilities.
Digiboard users
Global War supports the Digiboard by way of the Digi14 universal
device driver XIDOS5.SYS. The "universal device driver" is
DigiBoard's name for their INT14-based device driver that works with
any of the following DigiBoards: COM/Xi, PC/Xi, PC/Xe and,
presumably, any new boards that DigiBoard might produce. This device
driver replaces the board-specific device driver that used to
accompany each board. XIDOS5.SYS must be properly configured in
order for Global War to work.
Announcements To Players
If you would like to make some sort of announcement to all GW
players, such as a Hall of Fame list, you can create a file called
BULLETIN.ANS and place it in your Global War directory. GW will
output this file after displaying the copyright notice. BULLETIN.ANS
may be an ANSI file or a plain ASCII file. Similarly, the file
WONGAME.ANS is displayed when a player wins a game and may be
edited.
Hardware Clock
Global War relies heavily on your hardware time clock. If your time
clock is not working reliably or is nonexistant, get it fixed!
Fixing it usually means simply replacing 4 AA batteries or a small
lithium battery inside your PC. If you start getting "Timeclock or
Game Corrupted" error messages, it's too late.
Optional Files
All *.DOC files included in this archive are for your information
only and are not required by the game. The rest of the files ARE
required.
Page 39
Maintenance Related Issues
GLOBAL WAR requires no maintenance or Sysop intervention. Set it up
once and forget about it.
Completed games are automatically deleted after a specific number of
days (see WAR.CFG). Even games that have been "forgotten" will
automatically be deleted.
If you change the name of a user on your BBS who is involved in the
game, you will have to edit the WARxx.DAT files (where xx is the
game number) to reflect this change, or the game will not recognize
this "new" player. Change their name in WINNERS.WAR if they've won
any games too. Player's names are not case sensitive. I suggest
using an editor such as Qedit or DOS 5's editor. Don't use a word
processor. Many word processors insert weird control codes that
will give GW fits. Type over the old data, DO NOT delete or add any
lines or GW will surely crash with a runtime error.
Known "Bugs"
PC-Board Sysops will need to lower their online time to under 9
hours per call (32767 seconds) if they are using PCBOARD.SYS. If not
done, the time remaining stored in PCBOARD.SYS will wrap around and
become negative, and players will not be able to get into Global
War. DOOR.SYS does not have this problem, so it is recommended that
you use DOOR.SYS instead if possible.

───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
I have included in this section, example setup information for a variety
of BBS types. These batch files are considered extremely generic and
may require some customization by the sysop before they can be applied
to his or her system.

Global War, command line version
If your BBS can specify command line parameters (QuickBBS's menu 7 for
example) you will use this. The calling convention is:
WAR /C BaudRate ComPort MinutesLeft FirstName LastName
Edit WAR.BAT, which should look something like this:
@ECHO OFF
CD\BBS\GLOBLWAR
WAR /C %1 1 %2 %3 %4 %5
CD\BBS
In this example (for QuickBBS), the BBS is passing the caller's baudrate
(%1), time remaining in minutes (%2), caller's first name (%3) and last
name (%4). Include an extra parameter (%5) if you anticipate having
more than 2 word names (example: W. C. Fields). The comm port (COM1) is
hard coded in the batch file (1). A baud rate of 0 will cause Global
War to run locally.
Global War can be run locally from DOS using this method. For example,
typing the following:
WAR /C 0 1 60 FirstName LastName
will let you try out the game in local mode from DOS.

───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Global War was created with years of experience in both installing and
playing on-line software and running BBS software. I surely hope that
you have no major problems with installing and/or running this great
software package. In this section, I will attempt to address common
problems or errors that you may encounter while utilizing this software
with your system. If your problem is not listed, feel free to contact
me in any way for more assistance.
Q. I cannot run Global War because each time I do it reports that
the time-clock is corrupt in a particular game.
A. Unfortunately, this is an internal bug that has been fixed for
future releases of Global War. The only available fixes are to
fix or delete the corrupt data files for the particular game
mentioned. Refer to DATAFILE.DOC for information on the Global
War game data files. When deleting the data files, be sure to
delete all of the data files for the particular game (WAR??.DAT
and WAR??.MSG).
Q. My BBS doesn't create any of the dropfiles that Global War
supports. What can I do?
A. Your best bet is to use a door-file convertor (many are
available) to create a dropfile supported by Global War. It is
highly recommended that you utilize the DOOR.SYS format.
